On July 1 2016 new regulations come into effect which will have a profound impact on the documentation and international movement of shipping containers. The Safety of Lives at Sea (SOLAS) regulations drawn up and agreed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) state that the shipper must provide the shipping line with a Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of containers before they can be stowed on board a ship.
